New CDs in my collection in 2025#

(Work in progress as the year progresses, so remember to check every now and then if anything new popped up in the meantime.)

Mazzy Star, "Among My Swan"#

Mazzy Star's "Among My Swan" (1996) is one of my favourite album, and it's finally here in my collection. I found it through "Flowers in December," which were used on the "Wicker Park's" soundtrack. I see it's listed as a dream pop, but I never thought of them like that. Some dreamy alternative rock? Maybe. Their music is very often used in movies and series, so despite not being a hit band, you might have crossed your paths with them more than once.

St. Vincent, "All Born Screaming"#

St. Vincent's "All Born Screaming" is the second addition to my CD collection this year, thanks to the courtesy of Father's Day. It's also quite amazing that there are new CDs in 2024. But all that aside, I added it to my wishlist because the artists reminded my of many other things. Listening to it now, I can't remember what things. Never mind. It's very versatile, combining nice guitar strings, heaver wall of noise, and the vocals.

Brian Eno, "Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks"#

My first physical Brian Eno (with brother and one more fella, "Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks." It was not easy to pick an album from Brian Eno because there are many good ones. The Moon theme won. I listened to this album many times during work, but I really focused on it only when I played it from CD, and it's way more ambient than I registered. At times almost like Aubrey Hodges' soundtracks for Doom. I don't dig the second disc, which came with the remaster I got, but might give it a go.

"El Rey León"#

After the musical, they were selling some merchandise, and one of them was a CD. Something I simply cannot pass, especially that the edition is very rich: not only including usual descriptions and pictures from the show, but also musical notes and full lyrics split into roles. And all that for 20 euros. Some of the rare releases I follow on Discogs cost more. I need to plan a listening session now.

"Immortel, ad vitam"#

A new item in my CD collection is the soundtrack to Enki Bilal's "Immortel ad vitam," which was an adaptation/re-arrangement of a trilogy of his own comics. Largely composed of Goran Vejvoda's electronic compositions, with the addition of four songs. It reminds me a little of the soundtrack to "Planescape: Torment." A type of beats that I don't hear much any more. It also must have been even a decade since I heard it last time because it's absent from streaming services.

"Dune"#

I am a somewhat fan of Dune in general, although I read only the first book back in 1998. But I like the movies and the show. And that leads me to Toto's soundtrack to David Lynch's "Dune." The movie had troubled production, but this did not extend to the soundtrack, which I always liked and decided to finally get in a physical form. There are 80ish moments, but it got old way better than symphonic "Star Wars." I dig the opening monologue which was fully included.

As a bonus, there is Brian Eno's composition, "Prophecy." When I got "Atmosphere & Soundtracks" and I was listening to it, at one point I said to my wife that it reminded me of Dune's soundtrack. And then it struck me that I was referencing "Prophecy." Both albums are only 1 year apart, so this makes a lot of sense.
