Modern games for old consoles

2026-05-09

I downloaded a couple of SNES, Mega Drive, and one Amiga new, modern games from Itch.io, and I uploaded them on the R36S, but every game failed to run. Could be an issue with games, could be an issue with Rocknix, could be an issue with wrong emulator; finally, could be an issue with the device itself, being a cheap knock-off. So, for now, the experiment is over. I'll revive it in time. Meanwhile, I'll upload more Pico-8 games; those fit the small format of the device perfectly.

I was wrong, I was so wrong. It turns out, it takes time for a game to load, and original games at the time had some sort of splash screens, which those new positions lack, so it displays a black screen for a while. I realised that when loading a saved state of "X2: Wolverine's Revenge". So, yesterday, I tried again, and both games (one SNES, one Mega Drive) loaded and I could play them. Therefore, I will be writing a thread on brand new 16-bit console games. Sweet.

The Eldritch Monarch

"The Eldritch Monarch" is a game that reminds me the most of "Flashback," though technically, as visually it's rather fantasy; but the controls and gameplay are Flashback as hell. There are, however, elements of "Thief," because we have light detector and we can hide from enemies. It's a demo, and I managed to fall down the way that my character disappeared, but I would definitely buy the full thing.

NightVein

"NightVein" is a top-down hack'n'slash, reminding me of "Hyper Light Drifter" the most, gameplay-wise. The story, presented with a nice intro, is basically "Blood's" story: the main character is in a cult, falls in love with a woman from the said cult, he gets punished for it, then returns from dead to get his revenge. All time classic. Gameplay is solid, with sword and pistol and dashing. New quality on an old platform. How I like it.

Liminal

"Liminal" is a Game-Boy game where we explore a strange land inhabited by various creatures. We can talk to them and enter various places, there is even a platforming sequence (with unlimited tries), but I haven't encountered any dangers, which makes it a GB's walking simulator. And all in 4 colours. Nice. At one point, it displayed me a QR code; not something I expected from a game on Game Boy.
